I was looking at one of the aerial photos taken ca. 1939 and when zooming in, I noticed a playground in the rear of the building. In the enlarged view below you can see the see-saws and swing set. The playground appears to be mainly dirt. There is quite a tall fence on the north east border of the playground, probably to keep balls from getting away—who knows?
The enlargement also shows what appears to be an array of antennas that run around the perimeter of the roof. Are these a common radio antennae shared by building residents or are they instead lighting rods? More on that later.
Anyway, you can view the full photo at http://www.broadmoordchistory.org/graphics/Broadmoor%20aerial%201939.JPG
